why unruly abstractions?
I write because I want to connect.
In her book, Eugenia Cheng talks about how abstraction can be fun. I feel lucky that I have always been a very curious person. The journeys it drags me often leave my brain spinning. “Just fluctuating bundles of feelings and thoughts…rhythms, under a name.”, McKenzie Wark says to describe resonant abstractions. I abstract because I find joy in connecting the rhythms I encounter. Sometimes, I have the technical tools to express them more formally. Some other times, the concepts remain unruly, and I can only vaguely describe the vibe.
But even as my abstractions are not mature, I would like to share them with you.
For everything I write, there will be a sense in which my abstractions will be inadequate, and there might also be a sense in which they are illuminating. All my failures are hopefully interesting.
And if a cord resonates in you, share the rhythm back. My unruly abstractions will be less lonely with you around.
My opinions are my own. But maybe you also share the feeling with me.
